A trade-based nation, as it sits on a major junction of trade routes between the continent. Until recently, Heartland had been two countries. The older generation still call the different parts of the country “Kingsland” and “Queensland” out of habit. They were united through the marriage of the past monarchs (the queen died years ago, and the king has recently become bedridden). The crown passes to the eldest heir (occasionally, that will not be the legitimate firstborn). If there is none, then the major merchant houses decide amongst themselves who the next high lord will be. A hierarchy of positions take care of the law at various levels. Genders are viewed as equals, but natives of other nations often have to prove themselves before being locally accepted.
